Congratulations to Professor Ito Peng, recipient of a University of Toronto President’s Impact Award and the Carolyn Tuohy Impact on Public Policy Award! Professor Peng is the Director at the Centre for Global Social Policy, and a Professor of Sociology and Public Policy in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the Munk School for Global Affairs & Public Policy.
These awards recognize Professor Peng’s leadership in the area of international social policy. Her work has informed national and international policy bodies on issues related to gender equality, care work, transnational care migration, and the multidimensional and interlocking dependencies between the Global North and South through the work of care and the migration of care workers. She is a sought-after global social policy expert and advisor/consultant to key government and global policy bodies, including Statistics Canada, the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, Women and Gender Equality Canada, the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality, UN Women, the UN-DESA, the UN Research Institute for Social Development, the ILO, and OXFAM. Prof. Peng’s research continues to influence global policy development and leave a significant impact.
As a recipient of the President’s Impact Award, Professor Peng will be inducted into the President’s Impact Academy, which promotes continual excellence in research and innovation impact not only within the university but also beyond it. The Carolyn Touhy award is presented annually to a faculty member whose scholarship has significantly influenced public policy as part of the Awards of Excellence Program.
“These awards represent how U of T’s research community is coming together to tackle some of today’s toughest problems and making breakthroughs that result in real-world change,” says Leah Cowen, U of T’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives in the U of T News press release. Professor Peng is one of four individual faculty members to receive the President’s Impact Award this year. In addition to these four, the members of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table Leadership also received a collective honour.
