Short-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship in Care Economy 

One or two short-term (6 month, 8 month, or 12 month) postdoctoral fellowships are available in Professor Ito Peng’s research group at The Centre for Global Social Policy, University of Toronto. The fellows will join a research team devoted to understanding and modeling the care economy in different country contexts. While working on their own research, we expect the fellows to engage with the CGSP community and we encourage them to participate in our knowledge mobilization initiatives, team meetings, and our Care Economies Speakers Series. 

We are interested in candidates researching any aspect of paid and unpaid labour related to childcare, care of seniors, and/or care of persons with disabilities. We are particularly interested in policy-relevant research and invite interest from candidates in Sociology, Economics, Public Health and related disciplines. Candidates interested in the care economy in Canada may wish to access the research data that Peng’s team has collected. this includes survey and interview data with paid and unpaid caregivers in Canada. We also have partners outside of Canada that may be valuable to fellows interested in studying Asian, Latin American, or African contexts. 

Benefits 

The positions pay $70,000 CAD for twelve months and will be prorated for 6 or 8 month fellowships. The fellowships provide the opportunity to conduct independent research, engage with faculty mentors and graduate students, and participate in seminars, events and knowledge mobilization efforts. Professor Peng and CGSP will provide mentorship in both research and knowledge mobilization. 

Requirements 

The competition is open to domestic and international candidates who have completed their PhD between June 30, 2022 and December 2026 (expected). The candidates must have completed their PhD before beginning the postdoctoral fellowship but may start the fellowship at any time between September 2026 and March 2027. The fellows must be in Toronto during the tenure of the fellowship.

• cover letter that includes a research statement discussing overall areas of research interest, how the proposed project connects both to dissertation research and to future research goals, and how this career aspirations 

• 2-page research proposal outlining their research question, its importance for our understanding of the care economy, the duration of their preferred stay, their research plan for the fellowship period, and the expected output at the end of the six months. Reference list is not included in the 2 page limit.
