CGSP seeks social policy-themed op-ed pitches from UofT grad students

Authors of successful pitches will receive $500 honorarium for completed opinion piece

The Centre for Global Social Policy (CGSP) is seeking pitches from University of Toronto graduate students for opinion pieces that advance a critical analysis of contemporary issues and developments related to social policy. If a pitch is approved, we will provide $500 compensation to the author for approved and completed opinion pieces.

Background

The state of social policy is shifting in Canada and around the world. Policymakers at all levels of government are responding to social, economic, and environmental crises in ways that both hinder and advance social policy.

Our goal is to publish a series of opinion pieces that can help policymakers, advocacy groups, and the general public understand and respond to issues and developments in social policy from a critical (ie feminist, intersectional, anti-oppressive, anti-colonial) perspective.

We are seeking opinion pieces that touch on at least two of the following themes:

Eligibility

We are seeking pitches from current graduate students in any discipline in the University of Toronto.

Submitting a pitch

Pitches should be between 200 to 300 words and should provide an outline of the issues, arguments, and policy recommendations that the opinion piece will address.

To submit your pitch, use our online form.

We will accept pitches on a rolling basis, giving preference to those which address a timely issue. If we approve the pitch, authors will expand the pitch into an opinion piece for publication in a relevant platform. (We will offer guidance in terms of where, based on their content, to submit opinion pieces; we can also support authors through the submission process) Authors must be willing to receive and incorporate constructive feedback as part of an editorial process. We will also post all pieces on the Centre’s website at cgsp-cpsm.ca and promote via our social channels.

After receiving the final copy of the opinion piece, we will provide the author with a $500 honorarium.
